The Elephant in the Room
For you have possessed my reins and covered me in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13)
In our continued effort to answer some biblical questions, imagine that you live in America during the 1800s. Some people are owned by other people. Some slaves are treated like servants, but others of these human beings are held in chains, beaten, and mistreated in other ways. Either way, they are the property of other people.
How do you respond to this grievous situation? Do you believe that black people are equal to white people? Will you speak out against the practice of slavery, or will you keep silent?
What if you have friends or relatives who practice slavery—will you keep silent in an effort to keep the peace in the family? If you are against slavery, will pro-slavery civil and political groups accuse you of playing politics when you speak out against the practice? How will you respond to this?
Though these may seem like faraway questions, if we were to put the word ‘abortion’ in the place of ‘slavery,’ it would be a present and compelling situation. We are starting to see the elephant in the room.
Are not babies in the womb people? Do they not feel pain before they are born? Our text in God’s Word, along with other passages, indicates that life begins at conception. Abortion is thus the taking of a human life. .
‘Roe v. Wade’ was deemed to be unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in 2022. Did this automatically eliminate abortion in our land? No, it returned the decision to the states. Each state can now decide whether to allow abortion, limit abortion, or protect life.
Some states have provided restrictions on abortions. These restrictions vary by state.
Some states, including Minnesota, have decided to allow abortion on demand. A baby can be aborted up until birth. It can be mutilated, dismembered, poisoned or crushed even in the third trimester.
Is there a federal law which prevents these barbarous acts? No.
Though polls have shown repeatedly that people are not in favor of abortion on demand, our legislature, under the leadership of a particular political party, has decided that Minnesota is going to allow, and proudly promote. unfettered abortions.
This is the elephant in the room,
What is your response to this? Are you happy, unmoved, or appalled?
From the vantage point of this author, it is reminiscent of the extreme practice of the worshippers of Baal. They offered their own children in sacrifice to their false gods (1 Kings 11:6-8). Just as the Canaanites of old, our culture of death is slaying its children to the gods of materialism, convenience and personal freedom.
We have seen the elephant in the room.
Please, pause, and consider what you have read today.
