The Key to Success

The Key to Success

07.17.24

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.  (Proverbs 8:17)

It has been a few weeks since we last gave attention to the Book of Proverbs.  We are currently in chapter 8.  In this chapter we see Wisdom personified. Previously we considered verses 1-13 in which Solomon once again praises wisdom.  It would be helpful if we recall that wisdom refers to the Word of God, the Bible, the written Word, and ultimately to the Son of God, the Living Word.

Today we will focus on verses 14-21.  Solomon’s main point is that wisdom is the key to success.  The context may refer to success in governing, but the applications are many.  Each person needs success in whatever it is that God has called them to do.  Therefore Wisdom presents herself as available for our use, if we will seek her as God has intended through the Word and in the Person of His Son.

It would be well to recognize Wisdom’s power (14-16).  Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.  By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

Counsel and understanding refer to the range of Wisdom’s influence.  It implies that she can direct every area of the life if we will allow her to do so.

She has strength  This speaks of her character.  The one who exercises divine wisdom will be empowered to success.  Furthermore, God alone allows rulers to continue.

Having recognized her power, we must respond to her gracious invitation (17).  I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Wisdom seeks us in love.  Consider these words from the Apostle John.  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:10, 19)  If we love Jesus, we will seek for Him as He has sought for us.  Ideally we will do this early in our lives.  Practically, we will do so daily, early in the day, through the Word.

Finally, we need to realize Wisdom’s riches (18-21).  Riches and honor are with me; yes, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: that I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

The riches Wisdom offers are more stable than the purest of silver and gold.  They include- righteousness, honor, guidance, and even material blessings.  However, those who seek wisdom in order to get materials things will be disappointed.

Solomon has given us much to think about regarding wisdom.  Yet the best is yet to come as we will see Wisdom personified more clearly as the Person of the Lord Jesus (22-36).
