‘The Key to Life’

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7)

We are taking a walk through the first nine chapters of the Book of Proverbs.  This is our second article in this walk.

Last time we looked at the first six verses of Proverbs 1.  This text explains that Solomon, the king of Israel, is writing to his son Rehoboam, in order to prepare him for his service on the throne one day.  He makes clear that the most important thing his son needs is God’s wisdom.

In our text today we find the key verse of the entire Book of Proverbs.  We will focus upon it in this brief lesson.

The verse is repeated with variation in Proverbs 9:10- The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Whom are we to fear?  Jehovah.  This is the personal name of the only true God.  He is the Great ‘I AM.’

This is also His covenant name. By this name He seals His promises.  This would include His covenant given to mankind in Eden (Genesis 3:15). Primarily, however,  this is in respect to His  promises given to Israel: to Abraham (Genesis 12:1) and to David (2 Samuel 7:11-16).

What does it mean to ‘fear’ the LORD? It is more than respect; it is reverential awe.  It is an unspeakable wonder at God’s mercy, majesty, power and holiness.  It results in worshipful submission.  Realizing who He is, we submit to His perfect will.  We obey Him, giving Him  affectionate reverence.

Why is ‘the fear of the LORD’ called ‘the beginning?’There are several reasons.  It is the first step in our relationship with God.  It is the basis of our continued relationship with God. It impacts every area of our life.  It keeps one from evil (3:7; 8:13; 16:6), and it is the basis of a rich spiritual life (10:27; 14:26, 27; 22:4).

Why would anyone despise wisdom?  The ‘fool’ is a morally corrupt person who belittles wisdom.  He does not understand its value (3:13-18), and he does not value its worth  (12:16, 17).  Esau, who despised his birthright, and King Jehoiakim, who despised the Law of the LORD, are prime examples of spiritual folly.

The next portion of Proverbs (1:8-19) is a message from a parent to a child.  This we will plan to consider after Christmas.
