Who can find a Virtuous Woman?
01.29.25
Who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies?(Proverbs 31:10)
We have been looking at this unique passage over the past few weeks. God, through King Agur, has shown us the qualities of a woman who is highly favored of the Lord. We need to remind ourselves once again that this is an ideal. No one woman can embody consistently all of the traits enumerated herein.
Among other things, she is a diligent worker, she cares for her family, and she is trustworthy. We can’t know for sure, but it is likely that the king had his own mother as an example.
We now note the three blessings that precede and follow her. First is her value. She is described as being “far above rubies” (10). The ruby is a rare gem—as rare as a virtuous woman; or as rare as those who seek for a virtuous woman Abraham sought afar for a wife for Isaac. It would be well for a man to seek for such a woman. The man who possesses such a wife has a rare jewel.
Second is her praise. We are told that her children, husband, and the fruit of her works all call her blessed (28, 29, 31). This is all that this good woman requires—the affection and appreciation of her family. What greater earthly happiness could she know, than her children’s reverence, and her husband’s blessing?
Third, we are told of her secret—she fears the LORD (30). She may or may not possess what this world considers physical beauty, but beauty does not guarantee character. We have all seen this to be true. In any case, beauty will surely fade with time, but character does not need to fade. This woman loves, fears and serves the Lord. Her godly character shines forth in her life!
No one but Jesus could attain to the ideals set forth in Psalm 15 and Proverbs 31. Yet, in our lives on earth, we need to strive to be like Jesus. This all starts with our recognition of Him as the only One who can save and forgive us. It continues as we place our faith in Him alone apart from any works. It is furthered as we yield our life to Him to be molded by the Holy Spirit through the agency of His precious Word, the Bible.
